In late October, the Bulgarian National Assembly decided in a 175-49 vote to start sending military aid to Ukraine. There will be a decision over what kind of military aid to send to Ukraine. Previous to this decision, Bulgaria had been supporting Ukraine by working in their factories. And along with Hungary, Bulgaria was one of only a couple of EU countries that hadn’t sent military aid to Ukraine. The article has some quotes from both Bulgarian party leaders that opposed the decision, and some pro-Russian party members. And the article also says that a good amount of Bulgarians are actually sympathetic with Russia.
I think It’ll be interesting seeing if the Bulgarian aid will do anything, or if this will escalate the conflict. I haven’t seen any significant change even with EU aid, so I don’t think this will change it. If anything, this will turn out worse for Bulgaria since they’re so close to Russia, and rely heavily on Russian energy and supplies. Also, I don’t think Russia will care about this much. But if this will make a difference, it’s the fact that there’s another country joining the fight against Russia.
This article is related to class because it’s in my assigned region of the world, and because this article is about a very current event. The Ukraine-Russian war.
