On September 15, 2024, migrants were prevented from crossing the Tarajal border into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The migrants attempted to breach a border fence but were stopped by the Moroccan and Spanish security forces. According to the Moroccan Interior Ministry, 45,000 migration attempts have been prevented from January to early September. In August alone, over 11,000 migration attempts were stopped around Ceuta and another 3,000 migration attempts around Melilla, another Spanish exclave in Morocco bordering the Mediterranean Sea. These migrants attempted to enter the Spanish exclave in search of a better life in Europe. Multiple migrants climbed over the barbed fences that surround the two cities or tried getting to the Spanish territories by sea.

This article is important as it shows how extensive illegal immigration is an issue in countries around the world. Opportunities in politically western countries, and a lack of opportunities in their home country drives people to desperation. Last month, hundreds of young people tried to swim around the border, according to Spanish authorities.

The Spanish government and the EU might seek to add more protection for these two Spanish exclaves. In addition, the Moroccan Interior Ministry might do more to prevent any more attempts to cross the border into Ceuta or Melilla. Morocco wants to avoid further population issues in the future which is why they would be incentivized to increase their border security.

This connects to what we learned in class because of how these two possessions of Spain can make it much easier for Moroccans to make it to Spanish, and by extension, European soil. Another factor that could have a large impact on these migration efforts by the Moroccan citizens is the economic issues in Morocco or level of poverty that might push them to escape to Spain in hopes of better economic opportunities. According to the article, the Moroccan and Spanish security forces worked together to stop the migration into Spain so the two countries show that they are already practicing diplomacy since it is in both of their interests to prevent any more migrations of Moroccan citizens.
