On January 12th at an emergency United Nations Security Council session, the United States accused Russia of a “dangerous and inexplicable escalation” of its nearly four-year war against Ukraine, highlighting recent Russian military actions that have alarmed Western allies. U.S. Deputy Ambassador Tammy Bruce specifically criticized Russia’s use of the nuclear-capable Oreshnik ballistic missile near Ukraine’s border with Poland (a NATO ally), calling it evidence of intensifying attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian areas. The session was requested by Ukraine after a large overnight Russian offensive involving hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, including the powerful new Oreshnik system — used only for the second time in the conflict. Russia’s ambassador to the U.N. defended Moscow’s stance, blaming Kyiv for stalled diplomatic progress and insisting Russia would continue military operations until Ukraine accepts its conditions. Western leaders, including those from Europe, condemned the strike as a severe escalation that threatens regional stability and complicates ongoing peace efforts.

Another significant article- it shows how the war continues to create struggle for transatlantic relations and also tests the world’s international norms. Russia’s Oreshnik missile was deployed near NATO territory. Even if there wasn’t any nuclear threat, this is still seen by officials as a strategic irritation that raises the overall risk of a bigger confrontation. Shockingly enough, they are still working on a peace treaty which seems to be becoming increasingly more difficult everyday due to the escalation of Russia’s attempts. This is a global issue and not necessarily just a regional problem anymore. Historically, this long of an escalation with tension conflicts does not really end well.  The US will likely push NATO and EU partners to continue different sanctions against Russia while also keeping their diplomatic pressure on Moscow through their international institutions (different groups of countries and/or bank systems/ ect). European govs will continue their support for Ukraine, coordinating more air defense deployments near the NATO lines. Russia will keep saying this is a strategic and necessary move to its people, which sends a message to western peace negotiators that they will likely not stop their attacks. The arguing and escalations have resulted in a larger international response though, so that’s good. The UN and other groups will try to intensify their peace talks and de-escalation movements.

Okay because of Russia’s missile use near NATO territory, this shows a security dilemma because one side is increasing its military capabilities while also seeing how far they can push before being retaliated on, but it also heightens the possible threat response which escalates tensions internationally.
