Russia says it awaits US response on ‘important’ issue of expiring nuclear treaty

The article outlines the expiration of the NEW start treaty signed by Barack Obama and Dimitry Medvedev back in 2010 which set limits on the number of nuclear bombs that could be deployed and how many aircrafts, vehicles and naval vessels could launch these missiles. The article outlines Trump’s comment about letting it expire and re-convening to make a new nuclear deal which would include China. Russia re-stated that Britain and France should also be included in these talks if they occur. China has made it clear that any such deal is “unrealistic” and will likely not come to fruition as they have a much smaller arsenal then either the US or Russia.

While the idea of letting a non-proliferation treaty expire seems daunting, I believe that seeking to expand this treaty could help reduce the number of countries that are manufacturing and stockpiling nuclear devices. On the other hand, if a complication occurs and no new deal is reached, this could open the doors to a war where two superpowers hold enough bombs to cause extreme permanent damage. I think France and the UK would oblige to a new deal if China is also included.

The three important stakeholders in the article are Russia, China and the US. Russia is likely to go forward with a new deal if it includes the two countries as previously stated. China could go either way on joining or not joining a new deal but it leans towards a negative outcome. The US would most likely push Britain and France into a deal if it means making a new deal with China and Russia

This connects to the class through power and governance. It connects to power as the US is attempting to make a broader treaty that would limit the hard power of Russia and China. It connects to governance as countries set rules for one another by giving up sovereignty to reach a mutual agreement.
