More than one million people in south-eastern Ukraine were left without heat and water for hours following intensified Russian air strikes on energy infrastructure, Ukrainian officials said. The attacks hit the Dnipropetrovsk region and neighbouring Zaporizhzhia, damaging critical facilities during winter conditions marked by snow and frost. Hospitals, water facilities and other essential services were forced to rely on backup power systems, while residents were urged to reduce electricity use to ease pressure on the grid.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes as senseless “mockery” and warned of further large-scale attacks aimed at exploiting harsh weather. Ukraine’s largest private energy company, DTEK, said the frequency and intensity of Russian missile and drone strikes had left the power sector in permanent crisis mode, with little time to repair damage.
The attacks come as diplomatic efforts to end the war continue. Zelensky has been meeting Western allies, stressing that peace talks should not slow military support, particularly air defences. While he expressed hope the war could end in the first half of 2026, negotiations remain stalled over territorial concessions, which Ukraine continues to reject amid ongoing Russian advances.
This article highlights the effects the war between Russia and Ukraine is having on Ukraine’s citizens and infrastructure. These attacks have caused major and large power outages, leaving people without access to heat, water, and light, during the harsh winter months. This damage has caused major worry throughout this country and I believe Zelekey declared a state of emergency, a few days after these attacks. This article highlights also that the war is ongoing and is not slowing down, disrupting the push for peace by many countries like Ukraine and the US.
Ukraine is worried about the effects of the strikes on the people of Ukraine and stress about the inevitable damage that is going to continue to come as the war continues. The war in Ukraine is negatively affecting the people in Ukraine and in Russia which either cause an increase in peace talks, discussing the peace deal or increase in military war effect by both countries. Russia continues their war effort despite peace talks, mostly because if Putin fails to achieve his goal he will lose authority and legitimacy in the eyes of Russian citizens who have been greatly affected by this war. This could cause immense trouble for Putin’s regime.
Ukraine at the moment, I believe, is concerned about Russia’s war effort’s and its impact on citizens of Ukraine and their livelihood and what Ukraine’s plans in the future will be as war continues to grow and the lack of allies and nato presence of acceptance is still pressing. Russia is still considering their geographical interest of gaining and expanding territory to be more protected and defendable.
