A recent report was made that the Hungarian Foreign Minister has been passing sensitive information about EU negotiations to Russia. This report is of great concern to the EU. Peter Szijjarto, the Hungarian Foreign Minister, called the report “fake news”. Although, other members of Hungarian Foreign affairs claim that it would be ok if he did, suggesting other European representatives should also speak freely. Hungary is far closer with Russia than most in the EU, choosing to remain in relations with Russia even during the ongoing war with Ukraine. The European Commission stated that trust is an extremely important factor for the EU, and that they expect Hungary to clarify their position. Germany has responded to the situation saying they will not tolerate violations of confidential information. It is currently unknown if Szijjarto was wiretapped to get this information. All of this is happening when relations are already tense, with Orban traveling to meet with Vladimir Putin. Most EU officials are now outwardly showing their displeasure with Hungarian actions.

This article is important because it explains a growing divide between Hungary and the EU, which could have a lasting impact on the function and purpose of the EU. Depending on how Hungary moves forward, either relying more on Russia or not, it could affect their membership status and role in the EU. If Hungary continues to tell Russia classified information and refuses to help Ukraine it could lead to a larger problem with the EU involving how to deal with the information leak. I think Hungary should look to gain tighter relations with the EU, and if another party wins the upcoming election there is the possibility that this could happen. The EU should continue to pressure Hungary to take a more permanent side, for the IGOs security. It’s in Russia’s best interest to keep taking information from Hungary.

This connects back to what we learned in class about IGO purpose in international law to Monitor & Enforce to regulate state action. This can be connected as the EU has been monitoring Hungary’s actions and threatening enforcement. Meaning Hungary’s certification could be in jeopardy.
