The EU passed a new resolution that marks a huge turning point in policy on immigrants and refugees. This is planned to be done by introducing deportation centers outside of the EU. It will also introduce new legislation that will allow “unlimited entry bans” into the EU. The parliament removed a provision protecting people from ICE like raids. Concerns were raised from NGOs and civil society. Politically, this is one of the first times that we have seen the EPP which is a mainstream conservative party and far right groups combine votes in order to pass this resolution. This resolution makes a stark contrast in policy from that of the past decade and seems to be the baseline for further right leaning cooperation for votes on shared interests.
In my mind this vote, like the article says, is a stark shift politically. When we see resolutions and bills coming out of the EU they most often are leaning left and seem more or less social democrat more than anything. But now with this new resolution it is distinctly right leaning. Additionally, the fact that the right seems to be willing to unify and create a sort of a right leaning voters block, could be the start in change for EU politics from here on out. For the centers themselves, I’m not really sure what exactly this does for the states within the EU other than just saying we got them out of the country. I mean they will still be paying for them but just in another third world country rather than within their country.
There are three main actors within this resolution, there is the left leaning parties, the right leaning parties, and the far right parties. The left will have to respond by creating a block of their own if they want to regain control over the EU. If they are not able to rally under one flag and start voting as one in order to combat the right, they will have little to no chance at putting up serious resolutions or bills. The far right and the right will most likely see this as a win. I don’t see them working to closely on votes regarding more ambiguous things, but if votes for controversial topics, like immigration or china, I could see them rallying like we saw last thursday.
I see a connection to sovereignty and human rights. Sovereignty is connected because the entire resolution was based off of Immigration crises which is directly related to securing the borders of a state and regulating said borders. Human rights is connected because the removal of the provision and the creation of detention center esque areas could lead to serious human rights violations.
