EU leaders are concerned with the unstable and volatile nature of the Trump administration’s handling of policy regarding NATO. NATO has been pretty much lead by the US since its inception after WW2 creating a sense of dependence on the US for protection guarantees. Former US presidents have also been more liberal in their foreign policy which built more dependence on the US for this protection. Now that Trump, a realist, is in office, the US policy in relation to NATO has made EU states feel uncertain about the future of the defensive pact. Some EU states have brought forth wants for a stronger EU defensive ability and therefore less dependence on the US for protection in the coming future.
The US since WW2 has promised the protection of its allies. This could be shown in either freedom of the seas where the US has protected the ships of its allies to ensure economic globalization. Additionally, they have promised military action if attacked for any of those in NATO. Now that Trump is in office and the US foreign policy has changed, the future of US international relations is changing. States now have no real reasons to trust in the US because our promises look empty. For example, we vowed to defend those in NATO if attacked and yet we threatened to invade Greenland. I think that the actions of the EU represent how states around the world are feeling towards the US.
EU – They will most likely increase military spending. We already have seen the basis of this with the 16 billion Euro check for defense purposes. Additionally there will most likely be more military training exercises that exclude the US inside of the EU. US – The US will most likely continue its isolationist position, they may try to rebuild some more vital relationships, but other wise I don’t think that the US will think of many of its NATO allies as more than vulnerabilities.
I see a connection to the concepts of security, realism, and liberalism. Security is shown as the whole point of the article is addressing security concerns within the EU. It goes both ways as well, the EU is taking action in response to the US making decisions regarding security (saying that Greenland is necessary for the protection of the US). Realism is shown by the new administration seeing states and alliances as interchangeable and not important unless they are advantageous for the US. Liberalism is shown by the past presidents of the US and their foreign policy of trying to do the right thing even if it doesn’t maximize the security or interests of the US.
