King’s visit to US shows UK playing long game in fixing strained ties

King Charles of the United Kingdom is coming over to the United States and will be in both New York and Virginia in a state visit that is supposed to mend historically poor relations between the two countries. The King’s aims are wider than just courting the Trump administration, though, as he also hopes to speak to the greater American public and reinvigorate the ‘special relationship’ which has long defined UK-US relations. Britain has often deployed the royal family to America when the relationship is at its lowest, but there’s no telling if today’s political and global citizenry is as open as it was in years prior.

As we begin to turn away from a world of global connectedness and push into unilateralism, the relationship between the UK and US is ever-more important. The current American administration has made clear both its desire for allies to buck up, but also a need for their assistance. No other country in Europe enjoys the same favors as Britain, but as Europe itself evolves and rising powers like Poland and Germany shift the balance of power, the British Isles will have to prove that they can hold their weight without the help and assistance of the European Union. Ultimately, Charles’ visit is a hopeful one, but even British diplomats aren’t certain the special relationship will stand the test of time.

Perhaps the most poignant point of having multilateral organisations such as the UN is that countries needn’t ally themselves, because the world itself should be a hot bed for peace. That, of course, isn’t our world, but the same theme of the US dictating a world peace is unraveling before our eyes, and when we move into these new waters, we will have to be certain that our allies are strong economically, militarily, and socially. The United Kingdom has a stagnant economy, rotting military, and fractured society. Is it in our best interest to maintain our special relationship when it has become so one-sided?
