Trump says US reviewing possible reduction of its troops in Germany

Trump stated recently that his administration was considering reducing the amount of US troops in Germany, and further stated that a decision regarding the matter would be made shortly. This statement comes following criticism of Germany’s Chancellor and the Chancellor’s previous criticism of the Trump administration’s failure to conclude the war in Iran. Ultimately, the news runs in line with recent denunciations of other NATO members who refused to assist the US and Israel in waging war against Iran. Trump also has made remarks berating several allies for their failure to send naval assets to the Strait of Hormuz. No European diplomat has yet made comments on the promise to consider removing US troops from the region, but it is evident that relations have soured between Europe and America.

What are we doing? For decades, Europe has been our closest ally in preventing aggression from Russia, China, and other ‘enemies of America’. Not forty years ago, we were watching the Berlin Wall fall with prideful joy and we were celebrating freedom for an entire continent. Now, we’ve turned inwards and forgotten the people we helped prop up and rebuild. Removing US troops in Germany is not only a miserable strategic blunder, its also a signal to the rest of Europe that America is focusing on herself and leaving everyone else out to dry. Certainly, there’s the consideration that we barely benefit from NATO – the US accounts for over 60% of military spending – but, even with this considered, what do we lose from keeping troops in Europe? Logistical complications? Too much money on cost of life? Northern Europe is home to the best winter warfare wargames in the globe, Southern Europe holds the Mediterranean proving grounds, and Central Europe is an open plane perfect for preparing to defend against numerous realistic enemies like Russia with its vast steppes, or China with its rolling hills. Pulling away from our overseas bases is akin to upgrading our friend’s doors with all new locks and then throwing the keys outside. Simply put, it makes no practical sense.

The United States has long held itself to be a moral giant. We built ourselves on the foundations of constitutional superiority and, even now, we seem to be prioritising what we think is best for ourselves as opposed to what may be best for the group as a whole. IGOs like NATO only operate when each country works together and agrees and communicates with the others. Are we willing to leave that group? Sure, we’re moving towards isolationalism, but even the America of the early 20th century had allies in Britain, France, and South America. Be what it may, we benefit far more from acting together with other nations than we do standing alone.
