On Monday, Russia announced a unilateral ceasefire, beginning at 12am on Friday, to coincide with its victory day celebrations, a major national holiday commemorating WW2. Ukraine responded by offering an earlier ceasefire but simultaneously expressed skepticism around Russia’s intentions. Ukrainian leaders dubbed the truce as primarily symbolic, designed to protect Moscow celebrations rather than advancing peace negotiations. Russia also warned of retaliation on Kyiv if Ukraine disrupted the celebrations, while scaling down the size of festivities due to security concerns.

This situation highlights global politics concepts of power, nationalism, and legitimacy. Victory day is a powerful symbol in Russian identity, and the ceasefires can be seen as an attempt by Putin to reinforce domestic support and frame Russia in a good light. However, Ukraine’s rejection of the sincerity of the truce reflects the role of propaganda and competing narratives in international conflicts. In addition, the event also demonstrates how domestic political events can shape foreign policy decisions, particularly in authoritarian systems where public displays of strength are crucial.

Looking forward, it is likely that symbolic ceasefires tied to political events will continue but remain ineffective. These gestures are unlikely to produce lasting peace as they prioritize domestic image over negotiation. Instead, they may deepen mistrust and reinforce the cycle of conflict, especially as both sides continue military operations even during proposed truces.
