Europe’s lack of defense capabilities is not the only challenge in a prolonged war with Russia. Another major concern is the political and societal readiness of European governments and their population. European leaders need greater public awareness and support for the increased defense spending, especially as Europe has historically relied heavily on U.S. Military involvement.  The possibilities of the United States reducing military commitments to European defense has increased the pressures towards European nations to become self-reliant.

The article highlights Russia’s hybrid warfare, including the prolonged propaganda, cyberattacks, and political interference, which weakened European unity and support. Defense officials at the Munich Security Conference (MSC), warned regarding the European populations that aren’t prepared or willing to support this longed war. As a result NATO and European governments may need to prepare for a rapid action that will sustain a long war.

This article emphasizes that European security depends on more than just weapons and military spending. NATO officials have expressed increased concern over Russia’s hybrid warfare, which uses the public to weaken European nations before a larger conflict. NATO describes hybrid threats as efforts to undermine political institutions and public confidence. This issue is particularly highlighted in Eastern Europe, where reliance on the United States military has created a dependence that is now being reconsidered amidst multiple global issues. The article explores the impacts of greater European military cooperation, increased defense spending, and increased civilian awareness. Ultimately, it argues for maintaining a democratic debate to sustain long-term, intergenerational foreign policy efforts.

Every stakeholder handles situations differently. For instance, NATO is the primary force for this situation, as they could strengthen the collective defense planning, as well as the coordination within the Eastern European Nations. European governments could increase their defense production, which will automatically effect the spending to jump alongside it. For this to result, the public preparedness explaining the measures behind the war efforts is necessary. The European Union (EU) could coordinate a response for elections and help curate a uniformed campaign to better educate civilians. The UK could deepen its defense cooperation with European partners even while being out of the EU. The United States can imply a clear statement or contract to clarify its long-term assistance.

This article connects to our class discussion about national security and military power. Europe’s difficulty sustaining the prolonged war with Russia demonstrates the importance of military readiness, defense spending, and collective security. This also relates to the alliance, particularly of IGOs such as NATO. NATO is made up of sovereign states that cooperate as an intergovernmental alliance rather than a supranational government. This article demonstrates how NATO members must work together to respond to security threats. This showcases the importance of international cooperation and how alliances can strengthen the security of individual states and countries.
