Analysis Post: How Trump’s Decision on Palestine affects Education in the Middle East

In a world with a myriad of cultures, religions and ethnicities, education has stayed the common component that keeps society together. Knowledge is the world’s greatest tool and Palestinian students half way across the world recognize this concept. Though President Trump’s latest decision to cut spending to the United Nations threatens the education system in Lebanon for Palestinian refugees. Many of these refugees are without homes and find refugee in their education. One student expresses concern about the US governments decision, “They’re going to take away the thing that we care about the most, which is our education”(CNN). There are approximately 30,000 Palestinian students who attend school in Lebanon. The United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) provides free schooling and health care. The United States is the agency’s main source of funding and works to provide 45,000 refugees in Lebanon with beneficial services. The reason for the United States funding cuts is because the US hopes to see more reform and contributions from other countries. Belgium has already stepped up and contributed $million to the UNRWA. The UN run school teaches the students the importance of human rights, a sign on the schools wall reads, “stand up for someone’s rights today”. Quite frankly, this is something rarely seen and discussed in American schools.
