The president of Yemen, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, has fired the prime minster Ahmed bin Dagher. This primarily because of the poor economic state that the country is currently in. The country has been in on going war for a number of years. Yemen’s currency (the riyal) is dropping in value rather quickly since the start of the war. Yemen is becoming one of the poorest Arab countries. Close to twenty two million people are in need of some sort of aid. Another eight million are on the brink of starvation. The on going war has killed over ten thousand people and two million more are displaced across the country. To fill the spot of prime minister the country has chosen Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed. They hope that there won’t be as much negligence in the near future.
After reading this article I can say that certain parts surprised me whilst other parts did not. To see a country that has been at war in poor economic state doesn’t surprise me. It’s no mystery that war is expensive and with the war lasting so long it won’t become any cheaper. What did surprise me however was the numbers that were brought into up when discussion the repercussions of the war. I was surprised at the amount of people that are on the brink of starvation and the amount of people who are scattered and displaced across the country. I was also totally unaware of the currency value. I did not know that the value was dropping so quickly. Apparently the riyal has lost more than half its value against the dollar since the start of the war. This one of the main reasons as to why the prime minister was fired. The failure to avoid the collapse was a big issue that the prime minister couldn’t avoid. As a result I firmly believe that even with the new prime minister the value will not increase anytime soon.
