The people of Sudan are in crisis. Protesters are in the streets fighting against the current regime. President Omar al-Bashir has made it very clear he does not plan to step down without a fight. he has encouraged his military to fire and detain as many protestors as they can. Three protestors have been shot and killed in my father’s outside of my family home in Omdurman. Bashir is gripping on to power because he knows the moment he is toppled he will have to answer to the ICC. This anger towards this regime did not come about in the past few weeks. People have been angry. Unfortunately, the past elections have not represented that anger. Undercover reporter Yousra Elbagir revealed on Twitter that Russian speaking mercenaries are on the ground in Khartoum. It’s evident that the Kremlin is trying to prop up Bashir’s rule by any means necessary, including tampering with the elections, but why? Sudan has recently had a gold rush and it has been exposed that Bashir has been secretly selling this gold off to the Russians and pocketing the money while his people die in the streets from starvation. The rest of the world is standing by. Condemning the issue a if that would solve anything. The story of protests only broke mainstream media a little over 2 weeks ago. The world has been radio silent while a dictator of over 30 years terrorizes his people just to save himself. It’s up to someone within Bashir’s cabinet to step in and take control and call for a democratic election. At one point in 2012, the United States attempted to overthrow Bashir but they’re plan was found out. If it was in the national interest of the U.S. 7 years ago, should they not be sending help to the protestors? Should they not be supporting the topple of Bashir?
