The United Nations is now expressing that the current goings on in Libya could potentially lead to war crimes. They are urging all sides to avoid bloodshed as Khalifa Haftar’s forces march towards the recognized government in Tripoli.
In the past couple of days 47 people have been killed in Haftar’s march to the capitol. Amid the chaos an air strike has left the only functioning airport closed. Libya has been in a state of chaos, political instability, and violence since their ruler Muammar Gaddafi was deposed and killed in 2011.
According to the UN rights commissioner the people of Libya have been caught between numerous warring parties for years, experiencing terrible suffering and atrocious human rights violations.
Of the people killed 9 were civilians and 2 were doctors. The doctors were in Libya to contribute their services. There have been 40 documented attack on the health services surrounding Tripoli which is a violation of international law.
Much of the international community has called for a ceasefire, including the US.
The Unites States military is one of many with drawling supporting forces from the country because of the dangerous and unpredictable situation at hand. The UN will also be removing nonessential personnel.
This crisis has escalated and is continuing to escalate. While it is understandable that nations seek to protect their people when possible and take them our of harms way, something needs to be done and it should not soley fall upon Libya to solve this problem.
With international cooperation, this crisis could be managed in an efficient manner, while protecting the lives of many. The human rights violations and poor conditions of the people who have been living for years amongst fighting should not be ignored.
The resources and intelligence is available to help this warring country, more action needs to be taken.
