Analysis on Shelters in Idlib

Turkey has witnessed an influx of Syrian immigrants in the previous years and are starting to feel the effects. In an effort to decrease the number of migrants, Turkey is working to create safe places in Syria for the displaced people to live. In a new initiative, aid workers from Turkey are building safe and durable structures on the Syrian border. They are hoping this will help the displaced people and keep them safe while not letting them into Turkey.

Many of the surrounding countries are feeling the impact of the growing number of Syrian refugees. People have been fleeing Syria for more than five years and countries were welcoming refugees at the start. Now countries like Turkey have more than three million refugees and are experiencing the negative effects of this large group of people. Aid efforts are becoming prominent in the area in an effort to decrease the amount of refugees.

The newest efforts from Turkey include preparing the displaced people for colder and more intense weather. Turkish aid groups are building houses in Idlib, one of the few areas that has been spared from bombings and attacks during the civil war. Since Idlib is close to the Turkey border and one of the few safe places left, it was one of the only places where these shelters could be built.

I think that this will only be a temporary fix for the refugee problem. With the fighting continuing in Syria, the amount of people fleeing the area will keep growing. The new shelters built on the Turkey and Syria border can only hold so many people before they become overcrowded and unsafe to live in. The aid efforts in this area should become more common and have larger number of supplies and resources. If the fighting isn’t going to stop, then the people affected by the fighting need more support and safe places to go.
