Sydans inflation has gone way up over the past months from 166.83% to 212.29%. This data was from August to currently. this huge spike was caused by a significant increase in bread and vegetable prices, as well as increasing transport fares. another reason for this huge spike in Sudan’s inflation is their recent overthrowing of president Omar Al-bashir in 2019 from uprisings. Al-bashir had been the president since 1989, during his presidency he mismanaged the country much which has been one of the main reasons for the suffering of their economy. Although without a President at the time, the transitional government is trying to take care of this situation and boost the economy back up, during this huge deficit and shortage of essential goods like bread, medicine and fuel. Sudan’s national currency has plummeted greatly, as it sold for more than 250 to 1 on the black market. The official rate remains at 57 Sudanese pounds to $1. tensions in the country were high as well, as Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s decided to fire Saleh Ammar. Authorities put out 16-hour curfews in the cities of Port Sudan and Suakin, after angry protesters blocked major roads.

This is a all around bad situation in Sudan right now. There inflation is going up which means more of their civilians will be falling into poverty and debt due to not being able to afford items and needs. Sudan’s civilians are not happy with the governments recent choices, which will lead to protests and possible violence. Sudan has also been hit hard by the corona virus, making it even worse of a situation for their already deflating economy. They are experiencing seasonal flashfloods, causing lots of damage and adding to the calamity. This is just all looking very bad for Sudan as there previous president put them in a hole during his 31 year presidency that they are now stuck in and it seems they are being buried alive with many more factors devastating the country at this time.

NGO’s have sent decades forging ties in Sudan, and they are really gonna need them now. The African Union is one that may be a helping hand in this deep crisis, The african Union is an international organization that works in Sudan and promotes political, social, and economic progress. Sudan is going to rely on the African Union heavily as they are struggling with all of these.
