Sudan has officially signed the Abraham Accords, thus meaning agreeing to normalization and peace with Israel. Sudan is now the third of four countries to agree to sign on to the Trump administration-brokered accords. Although Sudan announced that they were willing to join in October, the government would not proceed until the US removed Sudan off of it’s list of state sponsors of terrorism. The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo worked out with Sudan that if they normalized with Israel they would take Sudan off of the US list of state sponsors of terrorism. Although hesitant, Sudan did agree to establish diplomatic ties with Israel. This carries great historic symbolism for Israel as the Arab League decided on its “three noes” – no recognition, no negotiations, no peace with Israel – in Khartoum in 1967.
These accords are important because it is one step further to profound peace in the Middle East. Sudan is a part of the Arab League and is the first in the Middle East to recognize Israel. Sudan working with Israel is good because it might help push other countries in the Arab League to also recognize Israel. If other countries were to work with Israel, it would help to establish a new set of peace in the Middle East. This also shows Sudan’s and Israel’s willingness to work with the United States. Sudan is working towards becoming a democratic country which will benefit the United States in the future.
The United States most definitely used the Abraham Accords in their favor. Sudan becoming a democratic country will help the relations between Sudan and the United States which is supported by the Democratic Peace Theory. These Accords also highlight how much power the United States actually has. The United States was able to convince Sudan to normalize with Israel, a country they swore to have “no recognition, no negotiations, no peace” with. Yes, the United States did have to remove Sudan off of the list of state sponsors of terrorism, but the country is working to fight against terrorism so did not really lose anything.
