Biden’s administration and the Palestinian government move to make amends after Trump’s damage. During former President Trump’s administration, Trump proposed a peace plan for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that contained heavy favor towards Israeli. Though not abnormal from an American standpoint, this gravely angered Palestinians leading them to break relations with the administration. Trump then encouraged many aggressive policy moves against Palestine like the defunding of a Palestinian refugee program. As President Biden plays clean up, he proposed a plan containing a two-state solution, encouraging the two to avoid major points of conflict. While the administration claims they are still positively pro-Israeli, they have introduced aid programs and made moves to re-establish relations with the Palestinians.
I think that this is a very nice shift in foreign behavior from the United States as the former administration was very aggressive in nature. I think that a peace plan supporting both countries is in theory a correct move however, it is unrealistic in nature. Additionally, I think that it is a “play it safe” move from Biden in his early days of his term. I believe that Americans and particularly American democrats are tired after four years of aggression from the governing body, internally and externally. Though lots of the renewed relations and programs may just be Biden’s political agenda, if what they say is true, helping the citizens of Palestine is not a bad thing.
I believe that the United States, while transitioning from administration to administration, is also transitioning to having less of a hegemonic role in the world. Due to said administration changes, a different portion of the American opinion is more heavily considered. This portion tends to be more focused on internal improvements, especially with the issues of police brutality recently. I wouldn’t be surprised if the United States goes from running the show in particular regions to playing peacemaker, like you see in this situation. I think that America is moving over from Hegemon to fit into the American citizen’s wishes as well as the growing potential of a bipolar system with Russia or China.
