The Arab League is having discussions with Lebanon about the ongoing rift that is occurring between Lebanon and the other 22 member states of the Arab League. The assistant secretary general of the Arab League in a televised press conference has said that the talks between Lebanon and the League are going in “the right direction”. There is a delegation that is going to the capital of Beirut to talk with Lebanon’s minister after he was critical of the intervention that Saudi Arabia and other countries had in Yemen after the president was ousted and asked for military support.

Lebanon is not happy with Saudi Arabia and eight other members of the Arab League because when the President of Yemen was ousted from power and asked for other nations to help him gain back power an effort led by Saudi Arabia went to help him. Lebanon is not pleased with this as they are afraid of the precedent that is being set that if someone is overthrown Saudi Arabia and other nations will come to their aid to reinstate the previous regime’s leader. This makes Lebanon afraid of what could happen if there is a coup in either Israel or Syria and the government that is supported by other Arab League nations is one that has policies that are not favorable to Lebanon.

There is not much that Lebanon can do to protest within the Arab League because it is Saudi Arabia that is doing the action. Saudi Arabia has the highest GDP of any nation in the Arab League so much so that it is higher than the next two highest combined. As such under the Realest theory of democracy Saudi Arabia has the most money and will have the most power so it can do as it pleases. The other countries must appease them because if they leave the Arab League the total GDP of the League goes down by 25% making everyone in the region less prosperous.
