During an annual speech about Western Sahara King Mohammed who is Morocco’s king did not mention anything about Algeria’s accusations that Morocco had targeted Algerian citizens in western Sahara. The relationship between Morocco and Algeria has been rocky for years after Algeria supported a Polisario front who said they were resuming their efforts to gain independence of western sahara which is a territory Morocco sees as their own. Algeria has also cut off all diplomatic relations with Morocco. They have stopped supplying gas to Morocco and also have blocked Moroccan flights from flying in Algerian airspace. Algeria accused Morocco of killing three Algerian citizens
I think that this might raise more tensions between the two countries and possibly cause more conflicts like this. After reading the article there is no telling whether Morocco was responsible for the killing of the three Algerian citizens so I don’t think that there was a need for Morocco’s king Mohammed to address the killing if anything it would have just raised more suspicion that Morocco was responsible.
By Algeria cutting diplomatic relations with Morocco it is giving Algeria more power. Out of the main powers Algeria is gaining economic power because they cut Morocco off from their gas supply which gives them the ability to supply other countries with that gas. They could also eventually use this to influence Morocco to not say they have control over Western Sahara by saying that they will supply them with gas. Last year the United States recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara which gives Morocco geographical and territorial power which is a long term power. Since then Morocco has been pushing more European countries to follow in the United States footsteps and recognize that Morocco has sovereignty over the Wester Sahara.
