The summary of this article is that the new parliament Iraq has elected Sunni lawmaker Mohammed al-Halbousi as speaker. Iraq new parliament held its inaugural session three months after legislative elections as Shia leader Moqtada al-Sadr is the likely kingmaker of the next government. This is important steps of Iraq towards establishing a new government three months after a national election. This now means that Parliament has 30 days from the first session to elect the country’s new president, who will then in parliament bloc will have to form a government. This is because the largest bloc in Parliament has the right to choose the new prime minister.

The lasting impact of this article is that former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki was now able to submit a document to the acting speaker requesting that their coalition be the largest bloc in parliament. If this submission goes through according to Iraq’s constitution, the largest bloc in parliament has the right to choose the new prime minister. Therefore this is has caused for a chaotic meeting among rival groups to choose a new president and a prime minister. As the leader of the biggest bloc, Shia leader Moqtada al-Sadr has the upper hand in forming a new government. But he will have to manage tensions with rival Shia groups that continue to reject the election results and are demanding to have a say in the government formation process.

The relates to what we talked about in class about the different type of governments in international relations. With Iraq being under a federal parliament system it was good for me to actual read about that kind of government therefore, I got a better understanding of how different parts of the world operate. Additionally, I feel that learning about this new parliament in Iraq will help me better understand when group go over there presentation for the projects especially the Middle East in general.
