A UN mission in Libya finds more evidence of human rights violations. This was found in Libyan secret detainee camps. The FFM has stated that the violations are widespread and systematic among the detainees. Multiple vulnerable groups have been targeted such as women and children. There is to be a report to be presented to Genva’s Human Rights Council this upcoming week.  Alongside that evidence is being uncovered on mass graves in the desert city of Bani Walid. Many witness acounts have been flaggged with evidnec towards mass graves and  many women have stated that tehy have been tortured in unspeakable ways aswell. The FFM also investigated a raid in the Gargesh region of Tripoli and found similar crimes with 215 children and 540 women in detention. The FFM, which was established by the UN human rights council, has been tasked to investigate the humanitarian crisis in Libya since 2016. A full deliverable is to be presented this June with the council.

My take on this article is that Africa is defined as a shatterbelt in IR theory. Without proper unity and guidance corrupt groups are going to continue to commit atrocities without proper unity. Large scale intervention by global superpowers will not work .This is proven by intervention in the middle east .The US poured trillions into Afghanistan for over 20 years for the issue to be right back to square one the minute they left. Social cleavages have torn Africa apart with ethnic, religious, socio economic issues to name a few causing widespread suffering and atrocities in African states. Without proper unity, and solutions Africa is going to continue to fall right back where it was, no matter how much money.

This relates to class with the ICJ and role of the UN in international humanitarian issues. The ICJ serves as the world’s courthouse and would try any convicted people for crimes and sentence them to some type of punishment. They have tried many war criminals, and some have gotten life in prison. These court cases take years to try with proper evidence, so these issues might take another decade to surface to the ICJ. As Well as libya is not apart of the rome statute so it would take a direct command from the UN security council to bring in the criminals to court.
