Palestini Residents in Gaza gathered together to mark “Land Day”, which is an event that puts an emphasis on Palestinian resistance to Israels attacks. Demonstrations were held on Wednesday March 30, and date back to March 30, 1976. The demonstrations consisted of Palestinians calling for the right to return to the land that Israel took from them in 1948. Palestinians celebrate Land day on an annual basis since 1976 when Israeli forces killed six unarmed Palestinians during a protest being held against an Israeli government decision to take possession of large area of Palestinian owned land. A member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine attending the event, Maher Mezher, said “Land Day was part of a wider phenomenon of Palestinians, both inside Israel and in the occupied West Bank and Gaza, reaffirming their national identity.”
In my opinion I feel like this is something that should definitely be stood up for. With all that has happened between Palestine and Israel, Palestine has lost a lot. With Israel controlling the Gaza strip that used to belong to Palestainians, it is understandable that Palestainians want to fight for their rights especially considering the fact that the Israeli government killed six unarmed Palestainians during a protest about Israel taking over Palestainian land. This also has more to do with Palestine’s resistance to Israeli attacks as well as still using it as a way to continue to protest the taking of the land.
This relates back to class by using Levels of Analysis. On a state level, Palestine has lost land to Israel because of force from Israel. With that being said it is understandable that the Palestainian people want to protest and stand up for their rights as people and as a country. On an individual level, a lot of the people who are protesting may have lost family land when Israel over took that large section. Therefore it may become a more personal topic than just standing up for their rights but also for what their families have lost throughout the years.
