Israeli air forces and palestinian militants traded fire across the Gaza frontier early thursday, as violence in Jeruslame erupts at the most holy site in the historic city. This follows the 11 day Israel-Gaza war. The violence in Gaza is due to the Israeli police and Palestinians in Jerusalem, which is the worst cross border fighting since last year. With the Muslim holiday, Ramadan, and the Jewish holiday, Passover, intersecting Jerusalem has seen a heightened amount of religious observances. The violence itself started late Wednesday when Palestinian militants fired two rockets towards Israel from teh Gaza Strip, while Israel aircrafts countered hiting militant targets on the seaside, a Hamas zone. One of the palestinian hit the city of Sderot in Israel. Protests in Jerusalem have started to break out, along with protests in other cities and Gaza itself.
I believe that there isn’t much that we can do in this situation. Yes we don’t want anyone to get hurt and the fighting between the two countries is awful. But everything that has been tried to stop the violence of bringing the countries to some type of agreement has not worked. Both countries are equally hostile to each other and their citizens. If there was anything that we could do we should be doing it because this situation has gone on long enough and the amount of people that have died because of it is devastating to think about.
This article relates to the international relations class because of how long and complicated this cross border dispute is. The Israel and Gaza violence has been going on ever since Israel was a thing. Both countries think that it is in their national interest to not have the other exist. Plus the amount of war crimes that have been committed in these regions itself. Both of the countries are fighting for the historic core of their countries and religions which makes the fighting all the more personal. With the capital of Israel being in Jerusalem, it is very symbolic to the state itself and the main religion of the country.
