The killing of an Israeli soldier at a checkpoint in the neighborhood of Shuafat on Saturday led to raids and the four-day closure of a nearby refugee camp. This event is just fuelling the fire of the persistent conflict between Israel and Pakistan. The history of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict began with the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. This conflict came from the intercommunal violence in Mandatory Palestine between Arabs and Jews from 1920, and erupted into full-scale hostilities in the 1947–48 civil war. In 2013, the United States attempted to revive the peace process between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. However, peace talks were disrupted when the Palestinian Authority’s ruling party—formed a unity government with its rival faction Hamas in 2014. There are still violent disputes between the countries about who gets what land and how its controlled
In class we have talked about how tensions between countries can turn into violence rapidly, for example Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia has been watching Ukraine closely since they separated from the USSR, their view of each other is hostile and power oriented. It didn’t take much to cause Russia to start invading Ukraine after hearing about Ukraine possibly joining NATO. Israel and Palestinians tension are so high and have been for years that a situation like this easily blows up over night.
