A report by the Washington Post states that the Iranian government has set its sights to kill and kidnap government officials, activists and journalists around the world, including the U.S. The Iranian government is going after retired U.S officials, critical media, and dissidents abroad- including the U.S, Britain, Canada, Turkey and Jewish civilians or those with links to Israel. These attempts are being carried out by criminal proxies instead of government agents. Recently, Iran has increased their frequency and scope of their attempts. Iran and Israel are locked in a conflict with Tehran funding terrorist groups in Israels borders and Jerusalem carrying out attacks on Iranian nuclear sites and scientists. This conflict has also seen an escalation in mutual cyberattacks.
This article is important because it could lead to difficulty when, and if, another state wants to have peace talks with Iran. Iran has essentialy set up a barrier between them and other states by going after anyone that does not agree with them. No one will want to cooperate with them after seeing how they are treating other states. This is unfortunatly not the first and only time Iran has done this, the American hostage crisis being exact proof of this. The crisis began when U.S diplomates and citizens were held hostage after agroup of militarized Iranian college students who took over the U.S embassy in Tehran. This certainly did not make any embassy workers want to go to Iran after that.
Offensive realists view this situation as this being the result that the world is in a state of anarchy, so it makes sense the way Iran is acting. Offensive realists see that when Iran is targeting foreigners they are protecting their national interests. On the other hand, Defensive realists view what Iran is doing as foolish, and not increasing their national security by making other countries mad at them, thereby leading these countries to take offensive actions against Iran, therefore working against their national security, which should be a countries top priority because citizens should be the biggest government priority.
