A UN resolution that addresses Israel’s denial of Palestinian self-determination has been drafted and approved by a key committee. Naturally, Israel vehemently opposed the proposal of legal repercussions, claiming that any consequences/restrictions would only further raise tensions between Israel and Palestine (lowering chances of reconciliation). The article states that the resolution is certain to be approved by the 193-member assembly before the end of 2022. The resolution cites Israel’s attempts to alter the demographic composition of the country, measures taken to maintain “character and status” of the holy city of Jerusalem, and adoption of discriminatory legislation. The article also mentions past actions the World Court has taken to mitigate tension between the two groups, specifically the 2003 ruling that Israel’s construction of a wall between West Bank (Palestinian populated) and Jerusalem was unjust and ordered Israel to cease construction immediately.
Speed is an especially important concern regarding this resolution, as Netanyahu and his team is set to be chosen and in office by the end of December. Netanyahu has even stated his intentions to continue building the wall that the World Court forbade. His extremely far-right coalition of governors serve to be a looming threat for Palestinians in the region, a looming threat that is extremely near. Recent updates have shown more individuals being killed by military raids in the West Bank, including an Al Jazeera reporter. With pressure from the company to investigate, there has been increased publicity which brings awareness that ultimately develops into anger.
As we’ve discussed in class, security strategies are a constant factor that influences whether or not a government will succeed. Netanyahu’s team complete with aggressors like Ben Gvir will push Israel into more conflict– not just with Palestine, but allies of Palestine and supporters of human rights as well. Taking such a stance has solidified numerous violent predictions for Israel’s future offensive plans. Despite how it looks from the outside, Netanyahu and his supporters believe that an offensive stance is essential to the national interest/security of their country. This is affected by cultural standpoints, as Netanyahu and Ben Gvir are right-wing nationalist jewish leaders who lead the movement against the Arab state of Palestine, but are backed by many like them.
