Syria has broken ties with Ukraine in July of 2022 after Ukraine warned Syria to not recognize Russian occupation zones in eastern Ukraine. Russia and Syria have been growing significantly closer after Putin intervened in a Syrian civil war and tip the balance of power in favor of President Bashar al-Assad. In turn Assad sided with Russia and recognized two Russian breakaway republics back in 2018 which were initially part of Georgia. Syria recognized more breakaway states in Ukraine in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which is in contrast to the international community as a whole. There has even been speculation of Russia asking Syria to join forces to aid in the fight in Ukraine. In March 2022 Syria was the only country to vote against the United Nations General Assembly that denounced the invasion of Ukraine and demanded the full removal of all Russian forces.
Russia and Syria have been known throughout history to be closely allied with each other even when their ideas were not popular. Russia forgave much of Syria’s debt back in 2005 after facing harsh debt post-Soviet era and became Syria’s main arms supplier. Syria also established a permanent military base for Russia and allowed to them to keep their nuclear weapons there. Russia has 11 warships at this base in Tartus and is allowed to have sovereign jurisdiction over the base. It has also been rumored that Russia was granted two secret spy posts in the region to signal intelligence.
