Thousands of Sudanese people and foreigners are evacuating, leaving entire cities deserted due to an ongoing civil war between two military leaders, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, and a rival paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces, commanded by Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.the 2 generals have agreed to a temporary ceasefire but this has done nothing to stop the leaving of sudanese people. People are either leaving by bus into Egypt or going to ports and leaving through them. These people are often left waiting for weeks with no food or drink until they are able to leave. The fighting has led to people’s homes being taken from them by officers, displaced 334,000 people and killed an estimated 447-550 people. evacuations to neighboring countries is estimated at around 800,000 people and has no signs of slowing. Sudan has attempted to negotiate peace talks between the 2 generals but results remain to be seen.
This is a tale as old as time with a civil war going on in a volatile area between two military leaders. Mass bombings and and fishing has led to destruction of infrastructure and the rise of fear in the Sudanese people. I would expect for people to continue leaving as I doubt peace talks will make meaningful impacts on the 2 leaders. history would suggest the fighting will continue to get worse and eventually for them to attempt to stop people from leaving as if there’s no people what are you ruling over? I expect checkpoints to be set up by these leaders that will stop Sudanese people from leaving the country. the sun will probably get involved and may have sanctions or the like but again in a civil war over power i’m not sure how much pressure they could put on sudan realistically to end it. The UN will likely provide ways for people to evacuate though and set up safe zones.
a part of class we talked about. I feel this article relates back to political stability. Sudan which has been starting to enact reforms after overthrowing a previous government has led to 2 factions now fighting. we’ve talked about how values are relative to people but values are also relative to individuals and evidently these 2 generals have different views on how the country should be run which now lead to war that will damage not only its people but the country itself and potential alliances as a government founded on a coup and then a civil war isn’t the most stable.
