A rocket struck the US embassy in Baghdad early Friday morning. The US embassy lies in an embassy located in the Green Zone of Iraq’s capital which was determined after the October 7th attack by Hamas on Israel and includes essential Iraqi government buildings and embassies. There were minor damages to the embassy but no reported casualties. Since the attack, there have been several drone and multi-rocket attacks on Iraqi air bases and troop locations in Syria. Iran-backed militias have launched several attacks on bases with US troops since the start of the Israel and Hamas war. In a statement, the U.S. The Embassy spokesperson claimed that from the beginning of investigations of the attack they were deducing that Iran-aligned militias could have launched the rocket. However, no group has taken responsibility for the attack. The U.S. State Department strongly condemned the attack, stating that Iraq’s security and stability have been threatened by the Iran-aligned militias that operate freely in the region and urging Iraqi security forces to find the perpetrators of the attacks. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani responded to the matter and stated that the attack was unjustified and that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
I feel that the attack on the US embassy in Iraq represents the tensions that have culminated because of the Israel and Palestine war and the impact the war has had on other countries in the Middle East. If there is no action from Iraq to find the perpetrators then the rocket attacks may continue on the embassies, air bases, and troop locations which can result in several casualties. The United States has already retaliated with airstrikes at Syria and several sites in Iraq and may continue to do so if the attacks in Iran continue because they view them as a threat to not only Iran’s security but also its stability as a country. The attack is important because it signifies the first attack on the fortified Green Zone in Baghdad which was established at the start of the war and serves as a national security concern for Iraq. Iran and the United States have no diplomatic relations because of their longstanding history, with the Iraq war and Iran’s backing of terrorist groups like al-Qaeda.
The Green Zone in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq signifies a place of Geopolitical importance, and makes sense why the United States would have its embassy there because it helps them exert its influence over Iraq to have control over Iran the Iran-aligned militias that have been posing global security issues. The location also is beneficial because it allows the United States to have troops stationed in the Middle East as conflicts like the Israel-Palestine war occur. Iraq’s choice to determine a fortified green zone in the wake of the October 7th event shows Iraq’s commitment to protecting their national security to make sure that they’re secure and can fight off potential conflicts that may stem from the ongoing war.
