France has issued arrest warrants for Syria’s president, his brother, and two other senior officials. France officials have accused them of using banned chemical weapons against Syrian civilians. They are being charged with complicity in crimes against humanity and complicity in war crimes. The officials supported an attack on the city of Douma and it killed more than 1,000 people. This is the first arrest warrant for Syria even though they have committed many acts that have amounted to war crimes. Even though Syria has denied using chemical weapons, they have been proven to use them repeatedly. Syria has refused to comment on the arrest warrants.
This is a huge event for Syria as their main leaders are being convicted of serious crimes and could be in for a lot of trouble. It is also significant that these leaders have been accused of war crimes in the past as well. They have been reviewed by the UN multiple times, and Syria has been on close watch because of their reckless activity. France has had enough of Syria’s violations and decided to put an end to it. They are sending a message to other countries that these behaviors will not be tolerated. Chemical weapons are very dangerous and their use of them should be taken with great caution.
This relates to class because it deals with International Security. Syria is threatening the lives of many people by using these chemical weapons. They have already been accused of multiple war crimes by the UN because of the risk they pose. Other countries are noticing the activities of Syria and how they impact the people around them. After using a chemical weapon to kill over 1,000 people, global powers had enough of Syria’s antics and sent out arrest warrants. The global powers are balancing Syria’s power and preventing it from gaining too much power or abusing its power.
