Summary – An Israeli drone strike on a car outside the southern Lebanese city of Tyre on Wednesday killed a member of Hamas from the nearby Palestinian camp of Rashidieh. The member was identified as Hadi Mustafa, not a senior member of the group but a leader of the group’s armed wing. The Israeli military confirmed it had killed Mustafa in southern Lebanon and called him a “significant” Hamas operative, alleging he was responsible for attacks against Israeli and Jewish targets around the world. A Syrian man passing on a motorcycle was killed by the attack, contradicting earlier sources saying that the two fatalities had been in Mustafa’s car. The drone that killed Mustafa hovered over the area for several minutes after the killing had been carried out.
Analysis – This is nothing unexpected from a standpoint of conflict between the two countries, as they have been in a state of war since October of last year, but an action like this killing a leader of Hamas is bound to inflict a reaction from the Palestinians. A significant leader, a leader of the group’s armed wing, is no small loss for Hamas. And frankly it’s surprising that he did not have more protection around him, a simple drone attack is all it took to kill him. There is no world where this killing is taken lightly by Hamas, there is an unavoidable response coming in the future and Israel must know that. They knew what they were getting into and what they were risking when they did this and still did it because they saw a chance to take out an influential person in Hamas and could not pass up the opportunity. A big loss for Hamas and as it stands now it is a win for Israel, but we will see after the imminent retaliation.
Connection to class – This drone attack, and much of the Israel-Palestine war relates closely to what we are talking about in class right now about international law. Each side has committed a huge number of war crimes and as we are talking about in class right now as well, there is really no punishment for it. The two are acting rashly and doing unspeakable things to one another’s citizens and innocent people are getting caught in the crossfire, but there is no part of that stopping the two sides. No country from the outside can intervene and stop the conflict because the hatred is so deep and has been around for that long so the war crimes being committed are hardly even acknowledged by the international community.
