According to this article, there are heavy rains that are battering up Gulf states, which are causing flash floods that have killed 20 people so far. Dubai Airport has reported that the rains will have some “very challenging conditions” for the passengers as the runways are being overwhelmed by water, making it difficult for planes to be moving. Authorities have alerted the public that more thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are on the way. The United Arab Emirates has experienced its largest rainfall event in 75 years. The heavy rains have also caused problems in Oman as more than 1,400 people have been evacuated into shelters because of the flooding.

This article is very concerning because of how much destruction the rains are bringing to the Gulf states and how the flood could also affect people when it comes to business and their well being. There could be no telling how long the floods will last at the moment. It is quite surprising how far the rains are spreading in Gulf states as floods are extending to cities in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. I just hope Gulf states such as Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain are able to get back on their feet and restore much of the damage caused by the floods as the heavy rains start to pass. Hopefully some NGO will be able to help support those states in the Gulf.

In International Relations, we have discussed national security, which is a state’s need to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity and vital interests both foreign and domestic. States in the Persian Gulf feel the need to protect themselves from the flooding. We have also talked about national security threats and how natural and man-made disasters count as a threat. Natural disasters happen when populations of people are living in geographic regions that are located in climate or geologically risky areas. The geography in the Persian Gulf is known for its coast to have various natural hazards such as tsunamis and earthquakes, which can be very severe.
