Summary – After Israel’s pledge to respond to the Iranian missile attack on Israel, Iran is now warning Israel against retaliation and saying that they will not hesitate to fight back if Israel does send an attack. “In case of any use of force by the Israeli regime and violating our sovereignty, the Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate a bit to assert its inherent rights to give a decisive and proper response to it to make the regime regret its actions,” said Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian. These remarks also came after an Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander talked about Iran re-evaluating its “nuclear doctrine”. These statements have led to much more serious demands of restraint for Israel as countries are seeing just how quickly this could escalate. “It is high time to end the bloody cycle of retaliation. It is high time to stop,” Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.

Analysis – This article just shows the seriousness and the real possibility of this conflict escalating to worldwide scale. There is so much talk and chatter about how it could possibly escalate if this this and this happen, but now it is simply, if Israel retaliates, they may get nuked. Nuclear warfare is nothing to joke about so the fact that Iran would bring it up, makes it a threat and a danger to the region. Especially in an area as close together as the Middle East, a nuke on Israel would not only hit and affect Israel, it would have massive ramifications on the entire region. Every country involved in the conflict sees the possibility of a World War Three and the efforts to de-escalate the conflict are purely to try and stop war crimes from happening.

Connection to class – On that same note, war crimes are practically bound to happen in this situation. Nuclear warfare is one of the worst outcomes, if not the worst, for every war. The amount of innocent deaths it would take and the damage it does to the surrounding area would be devastating. It would be human rights violations on top of human rights violations, and the region may never recover financially or socially from a back and forth nuclear bombing.
