Recently a ceasefire deal was struck between the state of Israel and the group known as Hezbollah that resides in Southern Lebanon. They had been fighting since the begining of the Israel and Gaza war in October 2023. However Isreal on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, carried out drone and artillery strikes in Southern Lebanon killing one person, after the ceasefire agreement was made. Israel’s president commented on this saying he would continue to “strike with an iron fist” against perceived Hezbollah truce violations. The defense minister added on that if the ceasefire fails Israel will target the entire state of Lebanon, not just Hezbollah. This ceasefire agreement is hanging on by a thread, and has been violated by almost daily Israeli attacks since it was signed of a week ago. On Monday Hezbollah even sent two projectiles to Isreal’s border zone saying it was a warning, as a response to the previously mentioned Israeli strikes. Then Israel responded by killing 10 people with its heaviest barrage of the past week.
So although a ceasefire agreement is in both of their best interests, their need for security is having them violate these agreements. Both are so paranoid that their security is still at risk they are taking offensive strategies. This is something commonly seen in realism, the fact that you can never fully trust another state and their motives. We can even compare this to the security dilemma, since technically both Israel and Hezbollah would be safer without any fighting. But for seeking their security they both have created a more hazardous situation than it could have been in a ceasefire agreement. So we can tell that both groups’ security is of great importance and in their best interest which is why they are able and willing to sacrifice all that they have. They are acting rationally in a way that both groups deems as their best interest to procure their security,
