On November 26, the UN reported that Kenyan Alice Nderitu, who served as the United Nations Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide, would leave after her contract expired. However, the claim seemed suspicious as the report came out not long after Nderitu had spoken to the UN, warning them about misusing the word genocide to describe the actions of Israel. Nderitu said that Israel did not meet the qualification to have their actions deemed genocide as they have been acting in response to an attack from a terrorist group and have done their best to minimize collateral damage. Nderitu says that Israel has not been acting to eliminate an ethnic group, which is the official definition of genocide conceived by Polish lawyer Raphael Lemkin in 1944.

If Nderitu left after the expiration of her contract, then there is no story to be had here. But if Nderitu was forcibly removed from her position at the UN due to her refusal to accuse Israel of genocide, then serious doubt could be cast on the legitimacy, integrity, and non-partiality of the UN. A part of why the UN was created was to help prevent Genocides from happening like those of the Armenian genocide or Holocaust during WWI and WWII. Some of the UN and the ICC have accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of committing Genocide in Gaza; however, with the pushback from Nderitu, the United Nations Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide, the UN’s and ICC’s Accusations could be called into question. What was more suspicious was that Nderitu’s contract expiration was announced soon after her call for the UN to be more cautious with the usage of Genocide. Nderitu’s office produced a paper in 2022 on when to refer to a situation as ‘genocide’ as she felt that the UN frequently misused the term to refer to large-scale events and not the specific targeting of an ethnic group. What is more strange is that the UN has the Full ability to renew Nderitu’s contract, so unless she announces she will not renew due to personal sessions, it starts to look like the UN refused to renew her contract.

The only stakeholder here is the UN. The UN is an IGO that includes many states that both like and dislike each other and must walk a tightrope to keep the peace. What this situation comes down to is whether Nderitu left her volition or has been forcibly removed. The Un needs to prove the Nderitu is leaving by her own choice, or else their integrity could be questioned. President-elect Trump has tossed around the idea of leaving the UN and cutting American funding for the organization. If Trump sees this as an egregious enough action, he could use this to justify leaving. I doubt many other countries would leave the UN, but it isn’t outside the realm of possibilities that more countries could get the idea to leave if the US does.

The only actor in this situation is the UN. This entire situation is either a personal choice or an internal political attack. Trying to get two people to agree on something is hard, and trying to get 193 countries to agree on anything is nearly impossible. As much as we might want to believe that ambassadors don’t play politics, we must remember that it is their job to balance their nation’s politics with others. If Nderitu were forced out of the UN, they would have to come up with a good reason for deciding to do something like that.at.
