After Israels crippling attack on Hezbollah last year, Hezbollah has been attempting to rebuild their forces under Lebanese military presence with assistance from Iran. Israel placed explosive pagers on much of the top Hezbollah officials and officers, after the timed explosion, many of the officers were found dead. Israel and Hezbollah have both agreed to a U.S.-brokered 60 day ceasefire, with the Lebanese military deployed to southern Lebanon as Israeli and Hezbollah forces withdrew. Both of the sides have accused the other of breaking the deal. Israel has accused Hezbollah of rearming during this 60-day ceasefire with help from Iran. The Israeli U.N ambassador has stated that the Lebanese government must focus on curbing the smuggling of weapons and ammunition across the Syria-Lebanon border. A Lebanese source close to Hezbollah denies these allegations.
After Israels intelligence agency, Mossad, planted pagers on Hezbollah leaders and eliminated many of them, Hezbollah has been reeling from the losses. Both Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to this 60 day ceasefire and withdrawal of troops. Hezbollah must rearm and bolster its forces if it wants to maintain a presence against Israel. Israels obviously wants to eliminate another threat against their small country, and this Iran backed arming of Hezbollah is very much of a concern to them. Israel has their arms tied behind their backs as they did agree to a 60 day ceasefire so they cant take any steps to stop this. So, Israel is calling on the U.N and the U.S, as well as Lebanon to step in.
Israel can make some political moves to stop Hezbollah rearming their forces but militarily there is not much they can do. The U.N has seemingly not taken any direct actions against this as their role is purely supportive, and they stress they cannot be blamed for this. Lebanon may continue to turn a blind eye to the rearming, as they don’t see any direct threat to themselves. The U.S. may make a move to intervene but it is highly unlikely they will as it doesn’t pose a serious threat to their ally, Israel.
In Israels eyes, their national security has been threatened as Hezbollah rearms, and sees this as a violation of this ceasefire. Israels need to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and vital interests foreign and domestic seem to be threatened by Hezbollahs actions. Israel may attempt to step in, but it will most likely be condoned by the international stage.
