Russia has been a key ally to Syria, supporting Bashar al-Assad during the civil war in exchange for military bases and influence in the region. However, many Syrians now view Russia as an enemy due to the destruction caused by its bombings, which targeted civilians and infrastructure. While some parts of Syria’s new government are open to continuing cooperation, many people—including rebels and Christian communities—want Russia to leave, accusing it of only acting in its own interest. Despite the backlash, Syria’s military relies heavily on Russian weapons, so some level of cooperation may continue as Syria rebuilds. The future of Russian forces in Syria depends on the country’s new leadership and its relations with Moscow.
Russia is a global superpower with a huge economy and military. They helped out the old syrian dictator because of similar ways of running there country. Syria also has a good geolocation. They are in a perfect route for oil that russia liked making it easy to get oil and also avoid conflict. Syria got there protection from Russia and Russia got good trade routes. Seems like a good deal for the old government. Now that they have a new leader who wants to reform their government away from dictatorship. Russia is definitely upset because they helped during the civil war and now the people are trying to get rid of them after. I would be upset if I were Russia so I could see them using soft power to stay allies with syria but it would be unlikely to actually start a conflict well also in one with ukraine.
Turkey by helping syria new government can decrease the chance of conflict in the middle east well also increase oil trade routes up into europe through these two countries. The geopolitics syria holds with there location really gives them the power once there new government gets on its feet.
