Egypt has proposed a reconstruction plan for Gaza to counter President Trump’s relocation plan. Trump’s plan proposes to relocate Gaza’s population to Egypt and Jordan and have the U.S. take control of the Gaza Strip. The U.S. Secretary of State said the US is ‘up to hearing alternate proposals.” Egypt’s plan has many points, including rebuilding Gaza without moving Palestinians, creating safe zones for displaced civilians, a three-phase reconstruction plan, a Palestinian committee without Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, a security force, and international funding for reconstruction. Diplomats from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Jordan are meeting in Riyadh to discuss the plan.
This is significant as Arab nations came tougher to counter Trump’s forced expulsion proposal which has been widely controversial internationally. Egypt’s plan would introduce a shift of leadership in Gaza, as the governance would exclude both the Hamas and Palestinian Authority. I think it could also create regional stability as it will help to prevent displacement, and more conflict, and create jobs for Palestinians by rebuilding infrastructure.
Israel has pushed for the depopulation of Gaza and supported Trump’s plan, but since the plan has been criticized by international and regional powers, maybe Israel could negotiate with Egypt’s plan and find terms they could agree on. Arab Nations should continue to work on a reconstruction plan and find ways to make it appeal to Western powers like the U.S. for support. IGOs and NGOs like the UN should make sure humanitarian aid reaches Gaza and maybe help with funding and reconstruction efforts later on.
I can connect this to class as the Arab Nations are exercising regional cooperation to create a multilateral security policy. Multiple countries are working collectively to make a security and reconstruction plan for Gaza and provide logistical and financial support for the efforts.
