Yemen’s Houthis emerge from Gaza war emboldened, and with more enemies

This article discussed the Houthis movement from a rebel group to a larger regional actor. This was highlighted after the start of the war in Palestine. The Houthis have actively supported Palestinians. Launching attacks on Israeli vessels in the Red Sea and being ready to engage militarily against Israel. The popular support of the terrorist group has also gained more traction in Yemen as most of the country is pro Palestinian and the groups direct support is seen as a good to many.

From a securities perspective the Houthis as a regional issue brings threats to US forces in the area like those stationed in Djibouti. Allowing a organization to gain this much power in a volatile region like the Middle East is an issue if the US is still interested in stabilizing the region. It also has maritime security implications as if they keep gaining support the threat to Red Sea shipping is again put in jeopardy. These factors can lead to an escalation of the low level conflicts internally in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. If they do take action against Israel if the ceasefire in Palestine breaks down then the US may take action against Houthi aggression again through the use of airstrikes further entangling the US in the Middle East once again.

This article can be interpreted and related to our class in multiple ways it can be seen by a exclusively security issue as the Houthis history of attacks in the Red Sea could lead one to the conclusion that we need to send more ships to secure the Horn of Africa and Red Sea again or do more to have a larger foot hold with our allies to secure shipping. It can also relate to US hegemony and this can show how US Foreign policy is going into a less direct approach where we are less directly involved.
