Indonesia has stated on April 9th that they are prepared to temporarily take in and shelter Palestinians who have been hit by the war in Gaza, estimating an arrival of 1,000 people in the first wave. Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, has been advocating for a two-state solution as well as sending humanitarian aid, and has promised to treat those that have been injured and let them stay until it is safe to return to Gaza. Additionally, Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the safety of Palestinians and their independence by pledging to increase its role in finding a solution to the conflict. Two months prior, Indonesia’s foreign minister had come out against Trump’s suggestion of permanently moving Palestinians out of Gaza, stating that it “strongly rejects any attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians”.
This article is necessary in order to understand the ways in which other countries are being affected, and how they are reacting, to the genocide in Gaza, even countries that are not located in the same region. In fact, this article is especially important because of the fact that Indonesia, a country nowhere near the middle east, has determined it needs to help the people of Gaza through providing sanctuary in their own country. Historically, Indonesia and Palestine have had close relations, and Indonesia has refused to recognize the state of Israel until a peace agreement can be reached, which can explain why they are attempting to help Palestinians in Gaza.
It is likely that Palestinians will take this opportunity to escape the genocide being committed by the Israeli government, but this could potentially raise concerns about the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza. The Israeli and United States governments have obviously been intent on somehow forcibly displacing Palestinians, and the people of Gaza and various other governments have strongly opposed this idea. However, if the Palestinians do end up temporarily evacuating from the Gaza strip to Indonesia, this could potentially give Israeli forces the opportunity to further move into Palestinian land and take over even more now that the land is unoccupied.
This article can be directly related back to the idea of universal human rights, which states that “no matter where a person resides, their ethnicity, religion, etc., their rights must be respected”. Palestinians people living in Gaza are actively having their human rights violated by the Israeli government and military forces, but this effort by Indonesia demonstrates its attempts to preserve the universal human rights of Palestinians. Additionally, this can also be seen as a states ineffective protection of human rights, as the state of Palestine has struggled to protect the human rights of its people.
