September 9, Palestinian residents living in Gaza City are overwhelmed with flyers from Israel, warning them to leave or they will a part of Israels next attack. The destruction of an area to wipe out Hamas. The day before Israel’s warning, a group known as the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, claimed responsibility for a shooting killing 6, right outside of Jerusalem. This event led to Israel’s warning. Many Palestinians have been on edge, awaiting destruction for weeks since Israel made a plan to destroy Hamas’s last stronghold. Many are in chaos, unsure where to go, unsure where it is safe. Some plan on going south, others plan on staying. Many others say they are completely trapped with nowhere to go. Palestinians are worried that Israel prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to repeat a catastrophe where hundreds of thousands of people fled. The state of Israel is being accused of genocide, local authorities state that over 64,000 people have been killed, but Israel rejects the claim, citing self defence from the Hamas attack that killed 1200 and held 251 hostage. Most Gazans have been facing displacement and a hunger crisis. Israel says a “mighty hurricane” will be unleashed if Hamas doesn’t free the last hostages and surrender. Netanyahu states that finishing off Hamas will be necessary to protect his people.

Israel’s push to eradicate the organization Hamas, and the damage done to Palestine and its citizens shows how far Israel will go to not just protect their people, but to fight back. But is this harm too much? This harm could stay for a long time, maybe causing an even longer and stronger tension between Israel and Palestine. Other states in the region might take sides, which could lead up to a larger conflict between the two, possibly expanding beyond the two and into the entire region. Even though Palestine massacred Israeli’s and held them hostage, is Netanyahu doing this just to hit Palestine back or is he seeking to obliterate the area to take over?

The strikes on Gaza City by Israel reflects to the topic of sovereignty in this class. Recognized states provide safety for their citizens but with attacks such as this on a stateless nation such as Palestine, they can not protect their people, Palestine does not have sovereignty. How will Palestine handle the events that have been happening? Will more attacks from Israel destroy Palestine, or will Palestine gain sovereignty, be globally recognized as a state by the UN, and defend itself with its newly found sovereignty?
