This article discusses the hostage parley between Palestine and Israel with the recent influence from the United States. Hamas showed openness to negotiating a deal for the release of israeli hostages at the terms that Israel would also returning Palestinian prisoners. This deal would ease a majority of conflict that has been occurring between the two countries, specifically over control of the Gaza strip. This deal was proposed after U.S. President, Donald Trump, encouraged Palestine to release 20 hostages. In August, Hamas agreed to a 60- day ceasefire plan that included freeing half of the Israeli hostages and a pause in Israel’s military advances. Although, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration claimed Hamas’ statement was “nothing new” and the conflict wouldn’t end unless Palestine freed all hostages, withdrew military presence and authority in Israel territory and the Gaza strip, and reconstructed the civilian government. The article, reported by Reuters, highlights the ongoing tensions and challenges in reaching a peace agreement between Hamas and Israel.
This event captures the impact of an external influence on conflict, such as the influence from the United States. Having military support from other countries is important, but having diplomatic support can be crucial when discussing foreign affairs. This article discusses an important point in the war because this deal represents a potential turning point in the war, which could mean a nearby resolution or compromise soon. Each country (territory) houses a blend of unique nationalities and cultures but mainly Muslim and Jewish backgrounds. This has fueled the religious aspect of the war, as some land has religious ties to either background, such as Jerusalem, which Israel has control over yet both countries claim as their capital. Religious motivations aren’t the main motivating factor for the war, but religious aspects have fueled the war significantly by empowering current ideologies and nationalism of both sides.
Governments could respond to this event by collaborating to reach a peaceful compromise, compromise would be a valid solution to dissolving conflict. Both want hostages back and returned, and they could begin with a low grade agreement and then work on developing a more solid agreement to work towards ending the war or at least reducing attacks and hostages captured and withheld. Outside governments could try and encourage peaceful negotiation, such as U.S. influence or nearby countries who have been affected by the debilitation of the region.
This event shows the difficulties of when multiple ethnic groups exist in the same area, and how that can lead to a war on control and power. These two countries are examples of the concept multi-state nation, because of the multiple ethnic groups occupying the territories. This event also is a good example of the importance of foreign affairs when handling warfare. Deals and negotiations, such as the ones in the article regarding prisoners of war, are a major part of foreign affairs and if not done properly, could worsen the already weak relations between the countries.
