In mid-October, after two years of fighting, Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire deal brokered by the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. The two parties agreed to stop all-out war against one another, and each side returned hostages and prisoners to the other.
Despite a six-week long ceasefire between Israel (& the Israel Defense Force, or IDF) and Hamas (operating out of Gaza), Israel launched a series of strikes on Gaza on November 19th, essentially voiding the ceasefire altogether.
Throughout the past six weeks, there have been occasional eruptions of deadly violence, and this one is no different. The attack left at least 25 Palestinians dead. Israel claimed the attack was of retaliatory nature, as their government alleged that militants had opened fire against Israeli forces in Khan Younis. Hamas stated that Israel’s attempt to excuse the attack by hiding behind a potentially false allegation was transparent. The group called on the United States to condemn the actions taken by the Israelis.
The United States hopes for the ceasefire to last indefinitely and plans to eventually aid the instatement of international security and peace forces, given Israel completely withdraws from Gaza. Despite these ambitious goals, many believe the ceasefire will end before any international actors get the chance to broker long-term, lasting peace between Israel and Hamas. Israel, despite agreeing to the temporary ceasefire, has continually launched attacks on any number of structures and places in the West Bank. While these actions continue, it is unlikely either side will agree to a more permanent plan for peace.
This conflict relates to Global Politics specifically within the key concept of Power. Neither side wants to appear weaker than the other, so they are both ensuring they don’t bow out of the fight prematurely. Israel seems to be more focused on this than Hamas, as the country has not stopped its attacks on the civilians of Gaza, despite the agreement that was made.
