On December 14, 2025, the Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylia (MAK) declared the birth of the Federal Republic of Kabylia.

The group, led by President Ferhat Mehenni, is “unabashedly secular, pro-Western, and eager to join the community of free nations.” The foundation of this state is believed, by Israeli media, to be very important for the US, Morocco, and Israel. America’s interests lie in the fact that Algeria is a formal operating base for American enemies. Algiers itself is an outpost on the Mediterranean for the Kremlin, even allowing the launch of stealth fighters that were specifically designed to challenge the strength of NATO and the US. Algiers has also opened its arms to religious extremist groups that pose a threat to the US because of the strength of America’s western ideologies. A free Kabylia nation would check that threat by placing pressure on Algeria’s relatively unchecked military functioning capabilities.

Israel has drawn comparisons between it and Kabylia, the main one being that both are indigenous nations that survived centuries of Arab-Islamic conquest. The governing body of Kabylia sees Israel not as an opponent, but a nation from which inspiration can be drawn. Israel, in some ways, sees Kabylia as an opportunity to form a new potential ally.

Morocco’s interests in Kabylia lie in the fact that it would no longer be the only reliable pro-American hegemony. Kabylia would be a partner more than a threat for Morocco, and represents the take-down of a nation that has been adamantly opposed to Moroccan governmental actions for decades.

The West now faces a choice, according to many Israeli news outlets, “We can continue to prop up a decaying, gerontocratic Algerian regime that buys Russian jets, funds anti-Western sentiment, and exports instability. Or, we can support the Federal Republic of Kabylia: a nation that writes women’s equality into its constitution, sings its anthem alongside Israeli allies and looks to Washington, not Moscow, for its future.”
