The United States recently announced that the next phase in the process of bringing the Gaza region to peace is finally underway. US special envoy Steve Winkoff reported that Phase 2 of the Trump administration’s 20-Point Plan to End the Gaza Conflict has begun.
The goal with this part of the peace plan is to shift the focus from a slow-moving, agreeable ceasefire to a full-scale demilitarization which will then lead to reconstruction and the beginning of a new, transitional government in Gaza. A key aspect of this plan’s success is the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, a special taskforce whose goal is to handle the daily affairs of Gaza while the rebuilding process is in its early stages.
Winkoff clarified that the expectation of Hamas’ full compliance, specifically in the issue of returning the final Israeli hostage. He issued a strong warning that failure to do so will result in harsh consequences. Israel maintains their position that the return of the final hostage is crucial to their compliance with the peace process.
The NCAG will be run by a “Board of Peace.” While Trump did not name specific figures, he did say that the board will be made up of “the most important leaders of the most important countries.” It is known that Nickolay Mladenov will be the new senior representative and will oversee implementation of the peace plan through all of its phases. Mladenov is set to be the liaison between the NCAG and the peace council.
