The White House said that it is moving into the second phase of Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan. Steve Witkoff said that the new phase will include the establishment of a transitional Palestinian governing committee and will begin the tasks of disarming Hamas and reconstruction. Trump’s 20 point plan that was approved by the UN security council laws out a vision for ending Hamas’ rule in Gaza. If successful, it would see the rebuilding of a demilitarized Gaza under international supervision, the normalization of relations between Israel and the Arab world, and the would introduce a possible pathway to Palestinian independence.
I do not think that this plan would be successful because even though there was a ceasefire, Israel and Palestine still have tensions. I think that the close relationship between Israel and the United States would make the citizens hesitant to the United States’ help. The main stakeholders in this article are the United States, Palestine, and the UN. The citizens are also involved since they are the ones being affected. The article states that Israel will have their army enforce an open-ended occupation. This will increase the chances of violent or non-violent protests occurring in Gaza. The article also states that the occupation will leave citizens homeless, unemployed, and unable to travel abroad. I do not think that this plan will work long-term, but right now Palestine needs a fast solution.
This conflict has already left long-term impacts on Palestine and Israel. Since the conflict is cultural and religious, I think that it will continue for many years even if there is a plan for rebuilding. This article connects to the IB Global Politics issues of Human Rights, Development, and Peace and Conflict. It also connects to the core concepts of interdependence and power. The United States is acting like a third-party mediator, but the country has close ties with Israel. The two countries are really relying on each other, but this may push Palestine away from working with the US. Human Rights are being abused with the starvation and bombing of Gaza. Even though there was a ceasefire, it will take a long time for the citizens to go back to living their normal lives. The 20 point plan is attempting to develop the country through rebuilding, but this will also take a long time. I think that the plan has a chance of being successful. This also connects to peace and conflict because the 20 point plan is aiming at maintaining the peace that the country currently has. I don’t know if a conflict as big as what has been happening for the past 2 years will happen again, but it is possible.
