Amid the recent unrest in Iran, the US has begun to withdraw some forces from bases in the Middle East. This action follows recent reports that officials in Tehran have told neighboring countries’ leaders that if the US strikes Tehran, they will retaliate and target US bases.

Iran is looking to deter President Trump and the US military from intervening in the protests that are occurring and escalating within the country, specifically in Tehran. Reuters reported that, “Some personnel have been advised to leave the Al Udeid airbase in Qatar by Wednesday evening.”

Other countires have begun battening down the hatches, so to say, in cautious preparation of a potentially widespread conflict that has to potential to blossom from the conflict between the United States and Iran. US allies have taken similar steps in the Middle East – the UK has withdrawn troops from its airbase in Qatar for “security reasons.”

Iran has asked for help from regional partners, warning that they will strike bases in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye, should the US take action against them. Their plea has been scarcely replied to.

Through their actions, Iranian government officials are looking to defend the country’s sovereignty and power in the region. A threat from the United States is to be taken very seriously, which the Iranian government understands. They are facing external pressures while trying to avoid being overthrown by protesters from all over the country, and a hit from the United States might be the nail in the coffin in their resistance efforts.
